Why is My Garage Door Not Opening or Closing Properly?

Garage Door Not Opening or Closing Properly?

Doesn’t it get frustrating when you’re unable to open and close the garage door with ease?

Do you often have to struggle with your garage door every day? Does your garage door become a source of distress when you’re planning to venture out and do your daily bidding?

Need garage door repair in El Cajon? Our professional garage door company is just a phone call away.

Well, just in case, if you’re there then this article is here to give you all the reasons why your garage door is not opening or closing properly.

Reasons Why Garage Door is Not Opening/Closing Properly

When the Photo Eye Sensor is Dirty or Blocked

Is the garage door not closing properly? It may be due to a blocked or misaligned photo-eye, a safety feature found in most doors since the early 1990s.

These sensors, located on each side of the door, emit a laser beam to scan for obstacles. If an obstruction is detected, the door halts or reverses to prevent accidents.

Common issues include dirt or misalignment, which can easily resolved by removing obstructions or realigning the sensors. Even minor obstructions like a pencil can trigger the photo-eye’s safety response.

Moisture or damage to the circuitry can also cause malfunction.

Timely maintenance & attention to misalignments can ensure that your garage door operates efficiently.

When the Remote Signals Are Blocked

Signal blockage or being out of range are common issues. Obstructions like tree growth, dirt, or physical barriers can affect the remote’s signal.

In minor cases, cleaning the antenna or trimming branches may solve the problem. If the antenna is broken, professional service is required.

If the remote doesn’t work from familiar angles, even after changing batteries, it may be necessary to address obstructions like tree growth.

Inspect the remote antenna for dirt and ensure proper alignment; a misdirected or broken antenna warrants calling a service professional.

When the Operator Receiver Has No Power

A garage door not opening or closing might be a simple case of an unplugged operator, often overlooked when exiting through an internal door.

Alternatively, a blown fuse or circuit breaker can cause power issues, requiring professional handling.

If troubleshooting, check for a faulty outlet by testing with an electric tool or lamp.

In such cases, temporarily plugging the operator elsewhere can serve as a quick fix until the outlet is repaired.

When the Transmitter Batteries Are Expired

A garage door not opening with remote activation could be due to a dead battery in the remote transmitter.

First, check if the door activates by manually pushing the button on the inside receiver; if it does, the issue likely lies with the remote.

Simply replace the batteries to restore normal functionality.

For remotes with pre-installed batteries, remove the back cover and replace the old batteries. A simple battery change can resolve what may seem like a more serious problem with the garage door opener.

When the Torsion Spring on the Garage Door Gets Broken

If your garage door motor is running but the door won’t open, broken springs may be the culprit.

It’s a common and dangerous issue often found with most garage door systems. Torsion or extension springs, which guide the door’s movement, have a limited number of cycles before needing replacement.

When a spring breaks, it can result in a loud and abrupt sound, posing a safety risk. If a spring breaks, do not attempt to manually open or fix it.

Instead, contact a professional service immediately to handle any such issues related to faulty or broken garage door springs.
